Submitting an Assignment

For the purposes of these instructions, "assignments" includes labs, homeworks, and projects.

Submitting an assignment involves submitting an electronic copy. Lab #1 is the ONLY exception to this (lab #1 can be submitted via either submission method).

Remember: labs are due within a week from when they're given. No exceptions (except for maybe extenuating circumstances).

The electronic copy allows me to more easily debug your program (if necessary).

Submitting an Electronic Copy

Please put your Pitt user name in the filename.

Assignments must be submitted electronically. If you can submit your assignment via anonymous FTP, or SFTP. Both methods can be used in a client like FileZilla. Also, WinSCP is a fine client.

You should submit ONLY 1 file electronically per assignment. For example, you may submit 1 long document containing all your answers/programs, or you may submit a .zip/.tar.gz/.bz2 file containing several files. Be sure to place the file in the appropriate subdirectory (e.g., if submitting lab #5, put it in the lab05 folder).

Submitting via anonymous FTP does not require a Pitt CS account, but is somewhat more flaky than submitting via SFTP. In the past, when using anonymous FTP, users can successfully submit a file but then the file will not show up in the files listing. FTP is also unencrypted (though, your submitted assignments are hardly state secrets). SFTP is encrypted. If you have a Pitt CS account, I highly recommend using SFTP.

Submitting via anonymous FTP

Server Name: cs.pitt.edu
User name: anonymous
Password: asdfjk; (password doesn't matter)

Then, navigate to the incoming/CS0447-rmoore folder, and place your file there. Be sure that your name is included in the filename. Do NOT go to the CS447 that you see immediately. Be sure you go to the incoming folder, and then the CS0447-rmoore folder.

Submitting via SFTP
You can probably also submit files via SFTP. To do this, you would login to cs.pitt.edu using your Pitt CS account user name and password, and you would navigate to:

 /afs/cs.pitt.edu/public/incoming/CS0447-rmoore
